The Holmes Huskies varsity football team scored only six points in the loss against Brandeis High School this past Friday at Gus Stadium. This is the second consecutive game where the Huskies were only able to score six points with the previous game coming against Brennan High School.
The first half was similar to the previous game, and the offense wasn’t able to produce or execute, resulting in the Husky defense being on the field the majority of the game.
Senior quarterback James Valdez had a rough first half as he threw two interceptions and was unable to move the ball downfield. But despite a difficult performance passing, he did manage to break away for a 68 yard touchdown run, giving the Husky team life for a brief moment. Unfortunately for the Huskies, all good things must come to an end. The Broncos quickly rained on the Husky parade as they answered back with 35 points to end the half.

The second half was a slugfest, both teams weren’t able to produce a whole lot of scoring which resulted in only one touchdown being scored by either team. One positive from the half was that it was a good sight seeing the Husky Defense step it up and only allow one score, but it was a case of too little, too late.
The Huskies football team has now lost three games out of their last four. Over the last four games the Huskies have been outscored 188-60 with the majority of the points (140) being scored in the first half. Although this stat may seem bad, it proves that the Huskies need to start fast in order to steer the game in their favor. Every team the Huskies have beat only scored 21 points or less in the first half, which allowed the Huskies to stay in the game and eventually get the win. It’s crucial that the Husky defense only allow a few scores in the first half to contest later on in the game.

The Huskies playoff chances are still alive and well, so if they beat Taft High School today at Gus Stadium at 7:00pm, they will be tied with them and have an opportunity at a playoff spot. The team needs all fans on deck to show up, be loud, and help get them over the hump and back in the win column.
