Crazy Crocheting

Crazy Crocheting

Did you know that in Ireland crocheting saved lives? It’s true crocheting saved Ireland from the depths of potato famine. Even though here at school there aren’t any life-saving crocheting stories, here is our fellow Jag, Lillian Hubberd’s, path to crocheting.

Lily all set up with her wide range of crocheted friends.

Meet Lillian, as her friends call her, Lily! She’s a 7th grader here at Jordan and is known for crocheting, among other things. “I wanted a new hobby, but nothing basic,” Lily mentioned. So, she chose the unique path of crocheting. Out of all the hobbies she could have chosen, she picked crocheting which is how she built up her mini crocheting business. “I started my business by taking mini orders,” she continued, but she never thought her mini business would’ve been this big of a hit. “When I first started crocheting, it didn’t really look the best, so I didn’t think it would end up being this big,” she added. However, from lots of practice and getting used to taking custom orders Lily’s mini business began to grow at school. She then started to take her craft to fairs around town.

It’s amazing to already have a business.  Where did it all begin?  “I watched a lot of youtube videos about crocheting; they help a lot for beginners,” she shared. Crocheting is a hobby that consists of two needles that have a hook at the end and of course yarn.

Just a couple of bags ready for the next craft show.

This process is what creates the desired patterns. Crocheting was invented by Mademoiselle Riego de la Branchardiere in 1829; though it is believed to have been around since the 15th – 17th century. It got its name from the French word of hook which is how we got crochet.

Interestingly, slaves in America used to crochet maps in their hair so they could help other slaves get to freedom. Even something as old as crocheting can still be used in a creative way just as it did back then. Sure looks like crocheting will be around for many more centuries and as it grows so will all of the different patterns and stories to tell from it.

Lily, a student here at Jordan Middle School, has begun her own business. Middle School! And from a hobby!  Can you imagine what her future holds? We can’t wait to find out.
