Did you know that 73% of students do not agree with school dress codes?

Although you can’t see anything inappropriate, tank tops are out of dress code. Gotta wear that jacket.

So many people around the world do not agree with the school dress code. Why you may ask? Well a lot of people would agree that the school dress code is sexist in some ways. According to EducationWeek, “Over 90 percent ban clothing worn predominantly by girls.” Part of the school dress code for Jordan Middle School is that your rips in jeans have to be the size of a fist or less, no spaghetti straps or halter tops, no leggings, tights, and the list just goes on and on! Notice how most of the reasons I listed are according to girls? Yikes.

Boys can’t wear muscle shirts and they can’t sag, those are the only things that apply to boys. They aren’t even told anything about the holes in their pants most of the time. And don’t get me started on how they don’t do anything about sagging their pants.

The difference between the boys and girls dress code is unbelievable. So many different outfits and styles are in right now like tanks, ripped jeans, but we can’t even wear them because of the dress code.

Students should be allowed to wear what they want, within reason, like if a student is wearing a super cropped shirt right below a students chest that’s where I draw the line. I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be a dress code because if we didn’t have one the school would not be appropriate. Just wear a shirt and some pants and that’s good.

The holes are a no, but so are those tears. Can’t wear these at school.

Charm Leffler, a 7th grader at Jordan Middle school, stated, “I do not agree with the dress code one bit because let’s say you are wearing a tank top but you have a jacket over it. How is that a dress code violation if you aren’t showing any skin?” She also does not like how we can’t wear leggings under the rips in jeans because it’s not showing any skin.

There are also some ways to help you when you get dress coded. If you get dress coded for your shirt being too cropped bring an emergency shirt. If there is any question or worry, bring another one just in case. Same thing with pants, if you get dress coded for your rips being too large bring an emergency shirt. It helps a lot.

Most principals and administrators do not like the idea of wearing tank tops or shorts that are too short because it is distracting towards men. How is that the girl’s fault? Men should know to be mature when it comes to a woman wearing a tank top. If some men are immature, someone has to teach them to be respectful. It’s not a woman’s fault if an immature man is being creepy towards her. If men are being creepy towards women why should women be in trouble for wearing what she wants to wear?

We have seen some growth with the dress code.  We are allowed to wear crocs which we are all thankful for, but then there are other things that have seemed to go backwards. For example, the tears in your pants or the leggings under the jeans. I really hope that someday, things will line up and everyone is on the same page.
