Friends surround senior Gabe Cook Jan. 12 following the ceremony during which he officially accepted a baseball scholarship to attend St. Mary’s University here in San Antonio. They are (from left) seniors Cris Chauira, David Mireles, Chris Olueda, Cook, Kevin Brashears, Robert Cardenas, and Rocky Lopez. The scholarship pays for everything except books, Cook said. The varsity baseball and football player said he prefers baseball, which he has played since he was 4 years old. He joined the varsity baseball team as a freshman. Cook said would like to pursue a career as a coach or athletic trainer after college, but he was also open to a professional baseball career, if it worked out.
